SCULPTURES IN PALSGAARD MANOR PARK
Slotsvasen – Another way of watching
Artist: Sophia Kalkau.
Sophia Kalkau often works with minimalist and precise sculptural forms alongside her photographic works.
Slotsvasen – Another way of watching, is a modern take on the large castle vases that once stood in the parks of manor houses.
The piece was originally turned in white-painted wood back in 2007.
For Palsgaard, however, Sophia Kalkau chose, with the help of stonemason Flemming Brian Nielsen, to create the toppling vase in the black granite type known as African diabase.
At the unveiling, she described her work as "a tumbler and a thrown head" -"Deep black, it reflects itself in its pedestal, in an enchanting and enchanted place," said Sophia Kalkau.
She is no stranger to receiving commissions like the one to create for Palsgaard. Nevertheless, the challenge has found a special place in her heart.
"It has been particularly exciting for me to carry out this task, because it is such a beautiful place. It has also been fun trying to create a dialogue between the historical buildings, the old park and modern art," said Sophia Kalkau.
