EXPERIENCE MUSICALS ON DENMARK'S MOST BEAUTIFUL OPEN-AIR STAGE

Palsgaard Summer Play

Since 1972, Palsgaard Manor Park has been home to the amateur theatre association Palsgaard Sommerspil, which for more than 50 years has performed a wide range of musicals and theatre productions to audiences of 10,000 - 15,000 people each season.

It all began with A Midsummer Night's Dream in the park near the old observatory. Since 1986, performances have taken place at Gudrun Schou's open-air stage, where a number of well-known musicals have been staged with great success - including My Fair Lady, Altlantis, The Sound of Music, Aida, Grease, Midt om Natten, Chess, Les Misérables, Miss Saigon and many, many more.

The story behind the stage

Palsgaard Sommerspil's adventure began in 1972, when a group of theatre enthusiasts from Glud knocked on the door of the estate owners Herbert and Gudrun Schou. They dreamed of performing theatre in the beautiful manor park - and the couple were immediately enthusiastic about the idea.

Herbert and Gudrun Schou took an active part in planning the first performances, and Gudrun Schou became an invaluable support of Palsgaard Sommerspil. Her dedication was so great that in 1986, the Schou Foundation gifted her a brand-new open-air stage on the occasion of her 80th birthday.

The stage, designed by Professor Vilhelm Wohlert and landscape architect Andreas Bruun, has since then been the setting for this annual summer performance.

To honour Gudrun Schou's efforts, a memorial plaque has been placed in the wall above the stage. Before the final dress rehearsal each summer, cast and crew gather at the memorial plaque to remember Gudrun Schou and her significance to Palsgaard Summer Play.
