WHAT YOU DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT PALSGAARD
A royal connection: Frederik Wedel Jarlsberg and Palsgaard
Among Palsgaard's more renowned owners was the Norwegian diplomat and baron, Frederik Wedel Jarlsberg, who owned the estate from 1898 to 1908. His time at Palsgaard was marked by an event of great historical significance: Norway's separation from Sweden in 1905.
In the aftermath of the dissolution of the union, the question of Norway's new monarch became crucial. During this pivotal period, Wedel Jarlsberg played a key role. He initiated secret negotiations with the Swedish royal family at Palsgaard, specifically in the right wing of the manor. This wing has since been known as "The King's Wing" in memory of the historic event.
These negotiations ultimately led to the selection of the Danish Prince Carl as King of Norway, taking the name Haakon VII. The same Prince Carl, had once served as a cadet aboard the frigate Jylland, another historical treasure with ties to Palsgaard.
