The history of the building
In the early 20th century, Danish electricity supply was based on direct current, produced by steam engines, gas engines, and from 1904 diesel engines. At that time, the voltage loss in the power grid was so significant that the power plants could only supply in a radius of about 5 km.
In the urban areas, electricity was usually provided by municipal power plants, while in rural areas, particularly in larger villages and railway towns, groups of citizens often joined forces to build their own power stations, for example as cooperatives.
At Palsgaard, Einar Viggo Schou built his own power station in 1910, powered by a diesel engine, that covered the estate's electricity needs.
